Prof Md Shafi Ullah Majumdar has been appointed vice-chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU), amid protests by BNP-backed teachers and officials demanding the removal of the previous VC.
The appointment was made through a gazette notification signed by Assistant Secretary Md Sultan Ahmed on Monday on behalf of the president.
According to the notification, President and Chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University appointed Shafi Ullah as the university’s Vice-Chancellor for four years under Section 10(1) of the Sylhet Agricultural University Act, 2006.
He is currently serving as a professor in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Information System at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.
Earlier, on October 17, 2024, Professor Md Alimul Islam of the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene at Bangladesh Agricultural University was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University.
A section of BNP-leaning teachers, officers and employees had been demonstrating at the university for the past two weeks, demanding his resignation over allegations of various irregularities and corruption.
The notification appointing Prof Mohummad Shofi Ullah Mazumder as the new Vice-Chancellor came amid the ongoing movement.
