Four workers, including a Chinese national, were injured after molten iron splashed out of a furnace following a malfunction at Pharmic Steel Limited in the Mirsarai Economic Zone (National Special Economic Zone) in Chattogram on Monday.
The accident occurred at around 1:45pm, when molten iron reportedly spilled from the furnace and struck the workers.
The injured were Bangladeshi workers Monir, Jewel and Saiful, and Chinese national Zengling Hong.
They were initially taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Yuvraj, an HR and administration officer of Pharmic Steel Limited, said the workers were injured when molten iron splashed out of the furnace due to a malfunction. Company authorities immediately sent them to the hospital, he said.
Lutfor Rahman, in-charge of the Mirsarai Economic Zone police camp, confirmed that the injured workers had been taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment.
“The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined,” he said.
Raisul Islam, in-charge of the Industrial Police outpost at the economic zone, said he visited the factory after the incident. He said the injured were receiving treatment at the hospital and initial reports indicated that they were out of danger.
Babul, an ASI posted at Char-Sharat police camp, said police were informed that the four workers had been injured in the furnace accident at around 1:45pm. Factory authorities subsequently took them to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Pharmic Steel Limited produces refined steel at its facility in the Mirsarai Economic Zone.
