Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian on Tuesday urged government officials and employees to complete their daily tasks within the same day, saying public services must adapt to changing expectations and the growing demand for timely delivery.
Speaking to district administration officials and employees, Zahidul said people could no longer be expected to make repeated visits to government offices for the same service. “Finishing today’s work today is your sacred duty. You are in that chair to serve the people. If you leave today’s work unfinished, their needs for that day remain unmet,” he said, according to a press release.
The deputy commissioner said timely service, efficiency, accountability and responsiveness were essential to maintaining public trust, urging officials to regularly evaluate their performance.
He also warned that artificial intelligence and automation were rapidly transforming workplaces worldwide, saying no individual or profession should assume it was indispensable. Public servants must update their skills, mindset and working methods to cope with technological changes, he said.
Zahidul recalled receiving room service from a robot during a visit to China, describing it as an example of how technology was reshaping conventional services.
He instructed officials to implement government priority programmes efficiently, transparently and within deadlines, including canal excavation, tree plantation, cleanliness drives and dengue prevention initiatives. He also cautioned against wastage of public funds and urged officials to prioritise their health.
The deputy commissioner expressed concern over what he described as declining human values despite technological progress and improved living standards, calling on officials to reflect on their contributions to society, the country and the environment.
