A Chattogram court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of a sub-registrar arrested with Tk2 lakh allegedly taken as a bribe and allowed one day of questioning at the jail gate.

Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Hasanul Islam passed the order after hearing the bail and remand petitions, ACC Public Prosecutor Rezaul Karim said.

Abdus Sobhan, sub-registrar of the Pahartali Sub-Registry Office, was arrested on 22 September along with head clerk Faruk Islam and office attendant Rupun Das following an ACC raid.

The ACC had sought five days’ remand for Sobhan. After the hearing, the court granted one day for questioning him at the gate of Chattogram Central Jail and rejected his bail petition.

According to the ACC, the raid followed a complaint by lawyer Tarek-ul Alam, who had gone to the Pahartali Sub-Registry Office at the Chattogram court building to register two partnership agreements for a client.

The lawyer alleged that although there were no problems with the documents, their registration was being withheld. He was subsequently asked to pay Tk2 lakh or provide two air conditioners to have the documents registered, according to the complaint.

Tarek-ul Alam then contacted the ACC hotline 106.

An ACC team later conducted a raid and arrested Sobhan, Faruk and Rupun with Tk2 lakh allegedly taken as a bribe. The ACC subsequently filed a case against the three.

Last Thursday, Faruk and Rupun were produced before the court and gave confessional statements, according to court sources.

The two allegedly told the court that they had collected the money on Sobhan’s instructions.

The case is currently under investigation.
