Police recovered the body of a woman from a residential hotel in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday night.
The deceased, Kulsuma Akter, 26, was a housewife and a resident of Chanderghona under Eidgaon upazila in Cox’s Bazar.
Police recovered the body around 8pm from a washroom at Stand Park Resort near the Cox’s Bazar Central Bus Terminal.
Police said a man who checked into the hotel with Kulsuma, identifying himself as her husband, fled after the incident. He may have committed the murder, they said.
The hotel booking documents listed the man’s name as “Mohammad Arfan.” Kulsuma’s parents and relatives told police they did not know anyone by that name and could not confirm his identity.
Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Station, said police recovered the victim’s body after receiving information from locals.
According to her relatives, Kulsuma had filed a case against her husband, Harun, over a family dispute. The case is pending before the court, and a hearing was scheduled for Wednesday. Kulsuma had attended the hearing that morning with her three-year-old child, the relatives said.
Police could not immediately determine when or how she went to the hotel after attending court.
The OC said two hotel employees have been taken into custody for questioning.
Kulsuma’s body has been kept at the Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police are continuing their efforts to arrest those involved.
