Customs intelligence officials recovered 80 gold bars weighing 9.34kg from two airline staff members during a raid on the runway of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The seized gold is estimated to be worth Tk16.25 crore.
Acting on a tip-off, officials of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) took position at the airport and intercepted the two airline staff members on the runway after Emirates flight EK582 arrived from Dubai.
A total of 80 gold bars, each weighing about 117 grams, were recovered from inside their shoes.
The two are Md Manik Mia, an aircraft technical helper at Biman Bangladesh Airlines, and another employee, Md Mizan.
The authorities said an investigation was underway to identify those involved in the smuggling racket, determine the source of the contraband and trace its recipients.
