A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was shot and hacked by miscreants in Khulna on Sunday morning following a severe family dispute.
The victim has been identified as Md Iqbal Sheikh ,35, Vice-Publicity Secretary of Ward No. 31 BNP in Khulna city.
He is the son of Eklas Sheikh and a resident of the Islampara area.
The attack took place around 7:2am on Sunday near Hothat Bazar in Khulna city.
Iqbal was rescued by locals and rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment and is reported to be out of danger.
According to police and locals, Iqbal’s daughter had married Md Abir Sheikh, son of Alamin Sheikh of the same locality. Around three to four months ago, Iqbal brought his daughter away from Abir, triggering an extreme ongoing conflict between both families. Locals described Abir as a member of a local criminal gang and noted that he had previously launched an attack on Iqbal.
On Sunday morning, as Iqbal walked a short distance from his Islampara home for personal work, Abir, accompanied by Shaon and four others, ambushed him while armed with firearms and sharp weapons.
Following the incident, police inspected the crime scene.
Labanchara Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Shahidul Islam said law enforcement officers have launched an operation to arrest everyone involved in the attack.
