Police have arrested two people in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on allegations of confining and torturing a domestic help in their flat.
Sources at Dhanmondi Police Station said the flat owner, Nasirul Haque Siddiqui, and his wife, Shahnaz Siddiqui, were detained on Wednesday night.
They are currently being held at the police station.
Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Md Imdadul Islam Taiyab said preliminary investigations had found evidence supporting the allegations of torture.
A case has been filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, and both suspects have been shown arrested in the case.
Police identified the victim as Nazma Akter, a resident of Nilphamari district. They said she had long been out of contact with her family due to mental health issues.
The victim and her relatives alleged that she had been subjected to regular physical torture by the couple over the past two years.
