Freedom fighter and veteran political figure Salam Parvez Fakir, paternal uncle of Science and Technology and Posts, Telecommunications and ICT Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam, was buried in Tangail on Tuesday with state honours.
His namaz-e-janaza was held after Zuhr prayers at the field of Nikrail Palshia Rani Dinmoni High School in Nikrail Union under Bhuapur upazila. He was later buried at the designated graveyard area for freedom fighters at Naluya graveyard in Nikrail.
Before the burial, the upazila administration paid floral tribute and provided a guard of honour to the veteran freedom fighter.
The minister, recalling Salam Parvez Fakir before the janaza, said his uncle was like a friend to him.
“Salam Parvez Fakir was a freedom fighter of 1971. We grew up together from childhood, and many memories of my early life are connected with him. He was among those whose sacrifices gave us the Bangladesh we have today,” he said.
The minister sought prayers for his departed soul.
Politicians, government officials and the masses attended the janaza.
Salam Parvez Fakir died on 25 September while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Chennai, India. He was suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes and other complications.
He was 75 and is survived by his wife, two sons, relatives and well-wishers.
