Fire Service personnel brought a fire under control after it broke out from an electrical wire during an eviction drive in the Hope Market area of Mirpur-10 in the capital on Wednesday.
Raqibul, duty officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room, confirmed the matter, saying two firefighting units rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the fire and brought it under control.
The incident occurred around 10:30am while a city corporation eviction drive was underway on the footpath in front of Hope Market.
The Dhaka North City Corporation began the drive in the morning to remove illegal structures and vendors from the footpath in the Hope Market area. During the operation, a fire broke out from an electrical wire on the western side of Baitul Quddus Jame Mosque.
Following the incident, agitated hawkers and footpath traders allegedly set fire to three city corporation garbage trucks. A bulldozer excavator and a police vehicle were also vandalised.
When a police pickup truck headed towards the scene from the Mirpur-10 roundabout, hawkers allegedly hurled brickbats at the vehicle.
Meanwhile, journalists covering the incident were also attacked. A vehicle belonging to Jamuna Television was vandalised, while a reporter and a cameraman of Somoy TV were allegedly assaulted.
