At least six people, including a mother and her 10-month-old infant, were killed in three separate road and railway accidents across Jashore, Tangail, and Manikganj districts on Saturday.
Two dead as train hits easybike in Jashore
In Jashore, two men were killed on the spot when a train coming from Dhaka smashed into an easybike (battery-run autorickshaw) in the Krishnabati area under Jashore Sadar upazila on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Azizur Rahman, 40, and Ershad Ali, 45, both occupants of the easybike and residents of Tofsidanga village in Jashore Sadar upazila.
According to eyewitnesses and preliminary information, the Rupshi Bangla train travelling from Dhaka towards Jashore struck the easybike in the Krishnabati area, completely crushing the vehicle.
Upon receiving news of the crash, railway police arrived at the scene, initiated rescue operations, and recovered the two bodies.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Mamun of the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Jashore Railway Station confirmed the recovery of the bodies and said that legal action is currently under process.
Mother, infant daughter killed in Manikganj
In Manikganj, a woman and her 10-month-old daughter died after a speeding passenger bus hit their motorcycle on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Shibaloy upazila on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Sonia Akter, 26, a Master’s degree student at Devendra College in Manikganj, and her 10-month-old daughter, Jannat. Sonia was the daughter of Arfan Ali Sheikh of Jafarganj Poila village in Shibaloy upazila.
Her husband, Md. Abul Hossain, a resident of Khalsi village in Daulatpur upazila, serves as a prison warder at Tangail District Jail.
According to Abul Hossain, he had taken seven days’ leave to visit his in-laws’ house with his family for his wife’s Master’s incourse examination. Following the conclusion of the exam, the family was travelling on a motorcycle towards his workplace in Tangail on Saturday morning. When they reached the Tepra bus stand area, a Golden Line Paribahan bus coming recklessly from the opposite direction on the wrong side collided with their motorcycle. Frightened by the oncoming bus on the wrong side, Sonia fell off the motorcycle onto the road while holding her infant daughter, leaving both severely injured.
They were rushed to Shibaloy Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctor declared Sonia dead on arrival, while baby Jannat succumbed to her injuries during treatment. Duty doctor at the health complex, Dr Sammi, confirmed that the woman was brought dead to the hospital and that the 10-month-old child died whilst undergoing treatment.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Borangail Highway Police Station, Harun Or Rashid, said that police officers rushed to the spot, rescued the injured pair, and took them to Shibaloy Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced them dead.
He added that the offending Golden Line Paribahan bus (registration number: Dhaka Metro-B 12-2001) was impounded from the Uthali area and taken to the police station, though the driver and helper fled the scene. Legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway.
Two teenagers crushed to death in Tangail
In Tangail, two teenagers were killed after being run over by an unidentified passenger bus while crossing the road at Jamurki bus stand on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Mirzapur upazila at around 5:30pm on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Rudra, 14, son of Dalim from Jamurki village, and Jhalak, 15, son of the late Panchu from Naskarchala in Safipur of Gazipur district.
Police and local sources reported that a Dhaka-bound passenger bus struck the two teenagers on the spot as they were crossing the highway. Upon receiving the information, Gorai Highway Police recovered the bodies from the scene.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gorai Highway Police Station Md Sharif said that the police recovered the bodies and would hand them over to their families upon completion of legal formalities.
