A woman and her son were killed while her daughter-in-law was critically injured after a speeding covered van ran them over in Tongi area of Gazipur on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Ayesha Khatun, 45, and her son Yasin, 22. Yasin’s wife Arzina, 19, was injured in the accident.
The accident occurred near Station Road of Tongi Flyover in the afternoon.
Family members said the three were returning to their rented home in Nimtoli, Tongi, by bus after attending a wedding ceremony in Muktagacha of Mymensingh.
After getting off the bus at Station Road, they were standing on the footpath when a speeding covered van lost control and hit them.
Locals rescued the injured and took them to Tongi Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital, where doctors declared Yasin dead.
Ayesha Khatun later died while undergoing treatment at the hospital, while Arzina is receiving treatment there.
Following the accident, police with the help of local people detained the covered van and its driver as they were attempting to flee the scene.
Tongi East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Maksudul Alam said the bodies had been sent to the hospital morgue.
Legal action in connection with the accident is underway, he added.
