Tom Banton hit his first ODI century as England thrashed Sri Lanka by 223 runs to win the three match ODI series 2-1 at The Oval on Sunday.
England posted 355 for seven after choosing to bat first. They then bowled Sri Lanka out for only 132 in 29 overs to complete a huge win in the series decider. Banton led England with 126 after the hosts lost Ben Duckett for a duck in the second over.
Joe Root struggled for 18 before Janith Liyanage trapped him lbw. England were 68 for two when Harry Brook joined Banton. The pair rebuilt the innings before increasing the scoring rate.
Banton reached his maiden ODI century from 95 balls. Brook also attacked the Sri Lankan bowlers and scored 77. Their partnership put England in control before Asitha Fernando removed Brook.
Banton continued his attack and eventually departed for 126. His innings gave England the platform for a big total. Jordan Cox then provided the late push with 76 from 52 balls. Jamie Overton also added 19 as England finished on 355 for seven.
Sri Lanka needed 356 to win the match and the series, but their chase never got going. Sonny Baker removed Pathum Nissanka for one in his first over. Gus Atkinson then dismissed Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis to leave Sri Lanka in trouble.
Kusal top scored with 35, but Sri Lanka continued to lose wickets. Liam Dawson took three wickets, while Atkinson claimed two. Joe Root, Jamie Overton and Baker also picked up wickets.
Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 132 as England completed a 223 run victory. The result gave England the ODI series 2-1. They had won the opening match by 89 runs before Sri Lanka levelled the series with a 16 run victory in the second ODI.
