More than 150 leaders and activists from various political organisations, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and their affiliate wings, are set to join National Citizen Party (NCP) in Chattogram.
The formal ceremony will be held around 3pm on Thursday at July Mass Uprising Hall of Chattogram Press Club.
Nahid Islam, convener of NCP and chief whip of the Opposition in Parliament, will attend the event as the chief guest and will formally announce the names of the new members.
Hasnat Abdullah, lawmaker from Cumilla-4; Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, the party’s spokesperson; and Abdul Hannan Masud, senior joint chief coordinator and MP from Noakhali-6, will be present as special guests at the event.
According to party sources, former and current members from BNP, Jamaat, Gono Odhikar Parishad, and July Warriors are going to join NCP.
Reports indicate that several joint conveners of Metropolitan unit of Chhatra Dal (JCD) are likely to join.
Significant speculation has arisen regarding whether the former mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, Mohammad Manjur Alam, will join NCP.
While party leaders have refrained from official comments, NCP Central Joint Chief Organiser and Chattogram Region Supervisor Md Jobairul Hasan Arif confirmed that the former mayor has been formally invited.
However, Hozzatul Islam Sayed, senior member secretary of Jatiya Jubo Shakti’s Chattogram city unit, suggested that Manjur Alam’s joining is unlikely.
The prospect of the former mayor joining NCP has previously caused friction; on 14 April, NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah faced resistance from Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal activists while visiting Manjur Alam’s residence in the Kattoli area.
