Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday said that those involved in killings will be brought to justice, stressing that there will be no scope for revenge or injustice in the name of trials.
He made the remarks while addressing the July National Conference-2026 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.
The event was organised by the July 24 Martyred Families Society and the central executive committee of Amra July Joddha.
The programme was presided over by Chief Whip of the National Parliament Nurul Islam Moni.
Speaking on justice, Tarique Rahman said the government does not want a repeat of injustice in the name of legal proceedings.
He said those responsible for killings and other crimes would be tried under the law through a transparent process.
He emphasised that even if the process takes time, justice must be ensured in accordance with legal procedures. The BNP chairperson said the aim is to build a country where citizens enjoy dignity, rights, and security.
He also called for national unity, saying a divided nation cannot move forward. He urged all those who believe in Bangladesh’s existence to work together in strengthening unity.
Referring to the July mass uprising, he said people from all political backgrounds had taken to the streets, and their sacrifices must be respected. He said the movement did not belong to any party or individual, but was an achievement of the entire nation.
Tarique Rahman further said that those who lost their lives during the movement did so seeking change, and their sacrifices would be given the highest respect by the state.
He reiterated that perpetrators of violence and killings would face trial under the law and cautioned that justice must not turn into injustice.
The BNP chairperson also said the country’s development should not be hindered by division, adding that the government’s primary focus is improving the lives of citizens and ensuring national progress.
In an emotional remark, he said that if he could ask his mother about the 17 years of hardship and oppression she endured, she would advise against revenge and instead call for national rebuilding. He added that he personally carries the pain of lost colleagues and injured comrades.
At the beginning of the programme, Tarique Rahman handed over the July Memorial Awards to the families of martyrs and injured participants of the July uprising.
Those who received the commemorative plaques from the prime minister included Abdul Rob Mia, father of martyred Miraj; Ujjal Hossain, brother of martyred Selim; injured July fighter Al Miraj; and July fighter Aminul Islam Emon.
Later, the organisers announced that memorial plaques would also be distributed to all remaining attendees.
In turn, representatives of the martyrs’ families also presented a commemorative plaque to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
