The 54th batch of students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) officially began their academic journey on Sunday. Ahead of the commencement of classes, the JU unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) extended greetings to the freshers with flowers and pens in front of various academic buildings on campus.
The programme started at 9:30am, where JCD activists and leaders greeted the newcomers at several prominent spots, including the Faculty of Social Sciences building, the New Arts Building, the Computer Science Building, the Old Arts Building, and the Faculty of Business Studies. By offering flowers and pens, the student leaders symbolically welcomed the students while pledging to stand beside them in building a new trend of student politics and creating a student-friendly campus.
Speaking about the initiative, Riya, a fresher of the 54th batch, expressed her appreciation: “We had often heard stories about ragging and the issue of mass rooms in the past. But now, upon entering the campus, we see a completely different picture, which makes us feel good. We hope this continues.”
Another student, Rafine, also shared his thoughts: “I am truly impressed by this initiative of JCD. I hope they will continue to stand by us in the days ahead.”
Addressing the event, Jahangirnagar University JCD Convener, Zahir Uddin Mohammad Babor, said: “We want to eliminate the dirty political culture of the past and introduce a new trend in student politics. The welfare of students is our only goal. We are firmly committed to standing by them in any need.”
Through this symbolic welcoming programme, JCD wishes to emphasise its promise to practice a politics of service, inclusivity, and responsibility, marking a shift from previous political practices on the JU campus.
