Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) Member Prof Dr Md Aslam Hossain has urged researchers to ensure the best utilisation of technology to deliver the benefits of research to people at all levels of society, including marginal farmers.
“Only conducting research is not enough; quality must be ensured at every stage—from the selection of the research topic, research methodology, and analysis of results to publication in international standard journals,” he said.
Prof Aslam made the remarks as the chief guest while addressing a day-long seminar titled “From Research Idea to Q1 Journal Publication” at Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) on Saturday, reads a press release.
The seminar was organised by the sub-project PIN: C-53 of the ICSETEP project in the seminar room of the university’s ICT Department.
Prof Aslam said one of the primary responsibilities of a university is to create new knowledge, and high-quality research publication is the effective medium to present that knowledge before the society and the world.
Highlighting that the true value of research cannot be fully utilised if it remains confined only to laboratories or personal files, he added that when research results are published, it creates opportunities to reach the academic community, policymakers, industry, and the general public.
The UGC member noted that research and publication are complementary to each other. “When research is published in international-standard journals, it reflects the research capability of the concerned department and university, alongside that of the researcher,” he added.
He further said that regular and high-quality research publications enhance a university’s international visibility and academic prestige, while also creating opportunities for global research collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Mentioning that the current government is striving to advance the country by utilising science and technology, Prof Aslam said young researchers must come forward in this regard. He remarked that if the merit and creativity of the youth can be utilised, the country will advance further in research and innovation.
He also called upon the participants to work with new and timely research ideas and acquire skills in international publication standards to publish research papers in Q1 journals.
The seminar was presided over by Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Md Anisur Rahman, who is currently performing the routine duties of the Vice Chancellor. In his presidential address, Prof Anisur said creating something new in research requires a strong foundation of basic knowledge of the subject and research ethics.
He emphasised encouraging teachers and students in research, alongside increasing opportunities for international standard research and publication, to build MBSTU as a research-friendly university.
The seminar discussed various aspects of selecting research-worthy ideas, quality improvement, Q1 journal selection, and publishing papers in international journals. Prof Abdul Khaleq of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) presented the keynote paper.
