After years of speculation, acclaimed filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki is returning to long-form storytelling with ‘840’, a new web-series premiering on iScreen on September 15.
The project has been described as a spiritual successor to Farooki’s cult hit ‘420’, the 2007 Channel i drama that left a lasting imprint on Bangladeshi pop culture.
iScreen confirmed the release with an official poster on Friday, teasing what they call a “mystery-filled” production.
840 stars Nasir Uddin Khan in the lead, supported by a powerhouse ensemble including Marzuk Russell, Fazlur Rahman Babu, Zakia Bari Momo, Shahriar Nazim Joy and Zayed Khan. The cast also features emerging actors from Rajshahi and Naogaon, reflecting Farooki’s intent to spotlight regional talent.
Speaking about the series, Farooki called it an uncompromising reflection of Bangladesh’s political reality. “Through the lens of a district town, we wanted to show what life was like under the previous administration. You could call it an X-ray report of the Awami League’s misrule and I believe more such X-ray reports will follow,” he said.
Produced by Nusrat Imrose Tisha, with support from Impress Telefilm, the series brings together a strong creative team: cinematography by Sheikh Rajibul Islam, music by Pavel Areen, sound design by Ripon Nath, editing by Tahsin Mahim, art direction by Ibrahim H. Babu, costumes by Pooja Chowdhury and make-up by Md. Khairul Islam.
With political satire at its core, 840 promises to be one of the most talked-about releases of the year.
