A high-level US trade delegation will arrive in Dhaka today, Sunday, to discuss the 20% countervailing tariff imposed on Bangladeshi products in the US market. The delegation will be led by Brendan Lynch, Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, and will stay in the capital for three days.
A source from the Ministry of Commerce confirmed the visit and noted that a preliminary draft agreement had been developed in prior discussions with the US Trade Representative’s office. During this visit, both parties will engage in talks to refine various aspects of the draft agreement.
Earlier, National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman and Trade Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin had indicated that discussions were progressing regarding reducing the countervailing tariff from the current 20% to 15%.
Officials from the Ministry of Commerce mentioned that once an agreement is reached based on the discussions with the US Trade Representative’s office, the draft will be revised and finalized. It is hoped that this visit will further strengthen the bilateral trade relations between the two nations.
