The International Crimes Tribunal has ordered the publication of notices in two national newspapers directing Dhananjay Kumar Das, former joint secretary of the Public Security Division, to surrender in a case over crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.
The tribunal also fixed 25 October as the date for the next hearing of the case.
Prosecutor Faruk Ahammad, appearing for the prosecution, informed the tribunal that although an arrest warrant had been issued against Dhananjay Kumar Das, law enforcement agencies were unable to trace him at his permanent or temporary addresses.
The prosecution therefore sought permission to publish notices in two national newspapers asking Dhananjay to appear before the tribunal. It also sought time for the next hearing.
After hearing the prosecution, the tribunal ordered publication of the notices instructing Dhananjay to surrender.
Co-accused former home secretary Jahangir Alam, who is currently under arrest, was produced before the tribunal during the hearing.
Earlier, on 27 August, the prosecution filed formal charges against Dhananjay and Jahangir at the registrar’s office of the International Crimes Tribunal.
The tribunal took cognisance of the charges on the same day.
