Andrew Garfield says his first impression of OpenAI chief Sam Altman was surprisingly positive, making his decision to portray the controversial tech figure in ‘Artificial’ all the more complicated, writes Variety.
Speaking at the film’s world premiere at the New York Film Festival, Garfield recalled watching Altman testify before Congress and finding him honest, transparent and charismatic. He later spent two to three months studying footage of the tech executive before filming Luca Guadagnino’s drama.
The actor said the film carries a moral responsibility as AI continues to raise concerns about power and autonomy. ‘Artificial’ dramatises OpenAI’s turbulent period when Altman was fired and later reinstated.
Altman, who has not watched the film, said he doubts it will accurately portray events.
Written by Simon Rich, the film also features Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk. Neon will release ‘Artificial’ in US theatres on 25 December.
