Netflix is reportedly preparing to cut around 5% of its workforce in a major restructuring that could affect approximately 800 employees.
According to a report by Variety, citing Puck News, the streaming giant could announce the layoffs as early as next week. Netflix has declined to comment on the reported plan, while the departments likely to face the biggest cuts remain unclear.
The proposed cuts come as the company faces pressure over slowing viewer engagement and concerns about its growth. Netflix reported about 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025, meaning a 5% reduction would affect roughly 800 staff members.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the planned layoffs could affect creative teams, including employees working on feature films. If carried out, the cuts would represent Netflix’s largest round of job losses since 2022.
Netflix has made smaller workforce reductions in recent years, including changes within its global product and gaming divisions.
The company also faces growing competition for viewers as streaming platforms and other digital services compete for audiences’ time.
At a recent industry event, Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos acknowledged that the company was not growing as quickly as he wanted.
The streaming service has also faced investor scrutiny over engagement levels and its spending on content.
Netflix is scheduled to report its third-quarter 2026 earnings on October 20. The reported restructuring could therefore come shortly before the company’s next financial update.
Netflix has not publicly confirmed the reported job cuts, their timing or the teams that may be affected.
