The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has adopted by consensus its first-ever resolution on artificial intelligence (AI), titled “Implications of Artificial Intelligence for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights”, with Bangladesh serving as the penholder.
During the ongoing 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, Bangladesh worked with fellow Core Group members Algeria, Austria, Egypt, Greece, Guyana, Kuwait and Nepal to advance the initiative on AI and human rights.
Guided by Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the initiative was first presented to the Council in August 2026 by former Ambassador and Permanent Representative Nahida Sobhan on behalf of the Core Group.
Since then, the Core Group has engaged with Member States and relevant stakeholders through an open and inclusive process.
The consensus adoption marks a step forward in the Council’s consideration of the relationship between artificial intelligence and human rights, with a focus on human dignity, development, inclusion and international cooperation.
The resolution also highlights Bangladesh’s role in international discussions on emerging technologies, development and human rights.
Bangladesh said continued engagement and cooperation among Member States and stakeholders would remain important as the initiative moves forward.
