Police have arrested a man for allegedly hanging a garland of shoes on the incomplete sculpture of Bir Shreshtho Hamidur Rahman near the central bus terminal in Jhenaidah town.
Police arrested Abdur Rahman Samrat from Kanchannagar around 9pm on Tuesday.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sheikh Billal Hossain said police conducted raids in different areas following the incident. The suspect was identified by reviewing CCTV footage from the scene, he added.
Legal proceedings in connection with the incident are underway.
Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Md Noman Hossain told UNB that such disrespect towards a Liberation War memorial and a Bir Shreshtho would not be tolerated.
He said, “Following a meeting, the district administration has formed an investigation committee on a priority basis. Regardless of who is behind this act, strict legal action will be taken under a zero-tolerance policy.”
