A Dhaka court on Thursday rejected the bail petition of AKM Jamal Uddin, a professor of the Sociology Department at Dhaka University, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Paltan Model Police Station.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence, said defence lawyer Golam Rabbani.
According to the case statement, Jamal Uddin was detained by police on Wednesday morning from the Gulistan Zero Point area while participating in a programme titled “Bangabandhu shanti padayatra–2026.”
Police later showed him arrested in the Anti-Terrorism Act case and sent him to jail.
During the hearing on Thursday, lawyers including Khair Uddin Sikder and Golam Rabbani sought bail on behalf of the accused. However, Additional Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon opposed the bail plea representing the state.
After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail petition.
The defence also submitted a request seeking divisional facilities for the professor in prison. The court instructed jail authorities to consider the matter in accordance with prison regulations.
Jamal Uddin, known as a pro-Awami League teacher’s panel at Dhaka University, reportedly faced harassment on the university campus in December last year.
Police said he went to the Zero Point area early Wednesday to announce the “Bangabandhu Shanti Padayatra” programme, where he was detained.
Later, Sub-Inspector Rafi Ahmed Sarkar of Paltan Model Police Station filed the case, accusing him of participating in an anti-state procession, threatening state security and causing damage to government property.
