Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have seized a large consignment of Indian contraband, including sarees, cosmetics, liquor, and cannabis, worth an estimated Tk1.06 crore in Habiganj district.
The seizure was confirmed on Saturday afternoon on behalf of the Habiganj 55 BGB Battalion.
According to BGB sources, acting on a tip-off, a special patrol team from 55 BGB conducted a drive in the Surma Tea Garden area on the old Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Madhabpur upazila, located two and a half kilometres from the border.
During the drive, the team spotted a suspicious drum truck parked by the roadside. Upon searching the vehicle, they recovered Indian sarees and various types of Indian cosmetics ingeniously concealed underneath sand loaded in the truck.
The seized contraband items—comprising Indian sarees, cosmetics, liquor, and cannabis—have an estimated value of approximately Tk1 crore 6 lakh. The BGB said that the special operation was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to ensure border security, prevent smuggling, and curb the influx of illegal narcotics.
The process of handing over the seized narcotics and other goods to the relevant authorities in line with prescribed regulations is currently underway.
Commenting on the drive, Habiganj Battalion 55 BGB Commander Lieutenant Colonel Tanjilur Rahman said that such operations will continue to protect public safety and prevent smuggling and the entry of narcotics through the border.
