Police have taken Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, the lawmaker for Satkhira-4, and his first wife into police custody for questioning following recovery of the hanging body of his second wife.
The deceased has been identified as 19-year-old Mst Mariam Khatun. Police recovered her hanging body at around 7pm on Sunday from Flat 203 on third floor of Building No 5 at NAM Bhaban complex, located opposite the National Parliament building.
Police confirmed that the flat is assigned as the room of MP Gazi Nazrul.
Briefing media personnel outside NAM Bhaban at around 10pm, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ibn-e-Mizan confirmed that the lawmaker and his first wife were taken into custody for interrogation.
Upon receiving news of a hanging body shortly after 7pm, teams from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, the Detective Branch (DB), and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrived at the scene.
Police subsequently carried out ancillary legal procedures at the site, while forensic evidence was gathered from the flat by personnel from the CID and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
Following the preparation of an inquest report, the body was dispatched in an ambulance shortly before 10pm to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife were taken away in a microbus trailing immediately behind the ambulance.
When asked by reporters whether the death was a case of murder or suicide, DC Ibn-e-Mizan said the matter remains subject to investigation.
He also declined to clarify whether MP Gazi Nazrul and his first wife were present in the flat during the incident, citing the interests of the ongoing probe.
