Satkhira‑4 lawmaker Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksuda Begum have been arrested in a case filed over abetment of suicide.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ibne Mizan confirmed the development.
The case was filed by Mariam’s father, Md Masum Billah. The accused include MP Nazrul, his first wife, and the complainant’s brother‑in‑law, who is a driver.
Ibne Mizan said the case has been lodged alleging abetment of suicide in connection with the death of Mariam.
He further said that the victim’s body has been kept at the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The body will be handed over to the family after the autopsy.
Earlier on Sunday night, police recovered the hanging body of Mariam, 19, from flat no. 203 on the third floor of Building No. 5 at NAM Bhaban in Sher‑e‑Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.
Some handwritten notes by Mariam were recovered from the room.
Police later took MP Nazrul and his first wife into custody Sunday night for questioning after the death of his second wife.
Nazrul was elected member of parliament from Satkhira‑4 in the 13th national election on 12 February. He was nominated by Jamaat‑e‑Islami.
In July, a video of Nazrul in an intimate moment with Mariam at a hotel in Dhaka’s Mogbazar spread on Facebook.
Following the incident, the lawmaker posted on Facebook, where he described the young woman as his second wife.
On 22 July, Jamaat expelled him from the party and sent letters to the Speaker, the Election Commission and other relevant authorities requesting action against him.
