At least four people were injured after powerful explosions at a weapons depot in northern Syria early on Monday, according to state media.
The blasts occurred at a Syrian army site near the town of al-Eis, south of Aleppo city, the state-run SANA news agency reported. Officials urged the public to stay away from the area, while the cause of the explosions was not immediately known, reports Al Jazeera.
Faisal Mohammad Ali, head of civil defence operations in Aleppo, told SANA that rescue workers had evacuated four injured people from the site.
Several blasts followed the initial explosion, with the detonations audible from a few kilometres away, Al Jazeera’s Obaida Hitto reported from Aleppo. Emergency services responded quickly, with ambulances and fire trucks seen heading towards the site.
Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib instructed residents to remain indoors for the time being, saying hospital, ambulance and emergency teams were on full alert.
Roads leading to the scene were closed to ensure civilian safety, Aleppo’s Internal Security Command said.
The incident follows a deadly blast in the same area just over a week earlier, when five people were killed after a vehicle carrying munitions exploded.
