New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will meet US President Donald Trump in New York on Monday, a day before Trump is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly.
Mamdani’s office confirmed the meeting on Sunday, reports CNN.
The talks will take place at Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s official residence in Manhattan. It will be the first time Trump meets Mamdani at the mayor’s residence.
A spokesperson for Mamdani said the meeting would “focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.”
Trump is due to speak at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. The White House also confirmed the meeting but provided no further details.
Monday’s meeting will be the third time Mamdani and Trump have met in person. They first met at the Oval Office in November 2025, shortly after Mamdani won the mayoral election. They met again in February.
Mamdani has said his discussions with Trump remain focused on New York’s needs.
“When it comes to the president, we continue to have a conversation about how best to deliver for this city,” he told reporters. “That is a conversation that has been done in person, it’s been done over the phone, and it will continue so long as either of us have the ability to deliver for the city.”
Despite their sharply different political positions, Trump and Mamdani have maintained a relatively cordial relationship during their meetings.
Mamdani’s staffers said the mayor has adopted a diplomatic approach towards Trump, which they believe has helped the city. New York has so far avoided the large-scale immigration enforcement Trump threatened during the mayoral campaign. Trump also threatened to “take over” the city but has since praised Mamdani’s leadership.
Mamdani’s aides did not disclose the specific issues that the two leaders will discuss on Monday. However, Trump’s immigration policies have remained a major point of tension.
Last week, Mamdani announced a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its expansion of a rule that could make it harder for some immigrants to obtain green cards.
Although Mamdani and Trump remain ideologically opposed, the mayor’s aides have pointed to the outcomes of their previous talks as evidence that maintaining a direct relationship with the president can benefit New York.
At their February meeting, Mamdani urged Trump to release Elmina Aghayeva, a Columbia University student detained by federal immigration agents inside her university residence.
After the meeting, Mamdani said Trump had called him to say Aghayeva would be released.
During the same meeting, Mamdani also presented Trump with a proposal for a major housing project in Queens that would require billions of dollars in federal grants.
The mayor used visual material to support his pitch for what could become the largest federal investment in housing in 50 years. Among the items was a mock-up of a New York Daily News front page featuring Trump’s face and the headline: “Trump to City: Let’s Build.”
The project has made no progress so far. However, Mamdani’s aides said both sides had agreed to continue discussions.
Monday’s meeting will also give Mamdani a prominent presence on the international stage. World leaders and journalists will gather in New York for the UN General Assembly, putting the meeting at the mayor’s residence under wider scrutiny.
Mamdani’s aides said the mayor’s approach of maintaining his policy differences with Trump while seeking concrete commitments shows that continued engagement with the president can deliver results for New York. The outcome of Monday’s meeting will be closely watched.
Trump has called Mamdani “my little communist” and has sought to use the democratic socialist mayor as a political foil by linking his views to Democrats across the United States.
During his mayoral campaign, Mamdani said he would “become Donald Trump’s worst nightmare.”
Despite the rhetoric, Trump has also described Mamdani as a “very rational person” and said he was “very comfortable” with him running New York City after their first Oval Office meeting.
“The better he does, the happier I am. I will say there’s no difference in party. There’s no difference in anything, and we’re going to be helping him to make everybody’s dream come true — having a strong and very safe New York,” Trump said after the meeting.
Presidential visits to Gracie Mansion are rare.
According to presidential records, Ronald Reagan was the last president to visit the mayoral residence. During the visit, Reagan presented then-Mayor Ed Koch with a prop cheque to signal his administration’s commitment to an infrastructure project in Manhattan.
President John F Kennedy visited Gracie Mansion in 1962 to deliver a speech on medical care to a group of US mayors.
President Jimmy Carter and first lady Rosalynn Carter stayed overnight at the mansion in 1978. Carter made the visit during an official trip to New York City and attended a bill-signing ceremony at City Hall with Koch.
Monday’s meeting will take place only days before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to address the United Nations on Thursday.
Mamdani, a strong critic of the Israeli government, has said he does not plan to take part in any planned demonstrations against Netanyahu.
