The lawmaker of Satkhira-4 constituency Gazi Nazrul Islam’s second wife Mariam Khatun, 19, has died. Her body was recovered from a flat on the third floor of Building No. 5 in NAM Bhaban under Sher-e-bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka.
On Saturday evening, police were informed after she was found hanging by the neck.
Upon receiving the news, members of law enforcement agencies, including Sherebangla Nagar Police Station, reached the spot. Sher-e-bangla Nagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam also confirmed the incident.
Detective Branch has taken Gazi Nazrul and his first wife into custody in connection with the incident. The body has been sent to Suhrawardy Hospital.
Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ibne Mizan said that upon receiving a tip off, he along with police personnel went to the spot.
The body was seen hanging from a fan through the window of a room in the building.
However, no information was available regarding when she had allegedly committed suicide, said the DC.
Forensic teams from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have been called.
Police entered the room after they arrived at the scene. Police said whether she was pregnant will be looked into.
Meanwhile, last July, Gazi Nazrul Islam came into discussion after a video of a “personal moment” spread on social media. Following that incident, he was expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami on charges of moral degradation.
