Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party after an internal investigation found evidence of moral turpitude.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of Jamaat’s central executive council held on Wednesday afternoon at the official residence of the opposition leader on Minto Road in Dhaka.
The meeting was chaired by Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, with members of the party’s central executive council in attendance.
In a statement, Jamaat said an organisational investigation was conducted following reports published by various media outlets concerning Gazi Nazrul Islam.
Based on the findings, the party decided to expel him under Article 62 of its constitution.
The party also decided to immediately inform the Election Commission (EC) about his expulsion.
The statement was issued by Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer, assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami and secretary of the party’s central publicity and media department.
