A video involving Satkhira-4 (Shyamnagar) lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam has been circulating on social media since Monday night, prompting widespread discussion.
The footage appears to show the Jamaat-e-Islami MP with a woman inside a room.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Nazrul Islam identified the woman as his second wife, Mariam Begum, and rejected the allegations surrounding the video as false.
Following the video’s circulation, some claimed that it was generated using artificial intelligence (AI).
However, after additional footage from the same room surfaced, local Jamaat leaders said the woman was the MP’s second wife. The woman and her father also made the same claim.
Satkhira district Jamaat Secretary Azizur Rahman said they believe the video was leaked from CCTV footage recorded at a house in Dhaka.
The video triggered discussions and criticism on social media. At the time, “Crime Barta,” a platform associated with the Satkhira Jamaat media cell, claimed that the footage was created using AI technology.
Later, the woman’s father, Md Masum Billah, told the media that his daughter Moriam Begum married Gazi Nazrul Islam on 17 June with a mahr (Islamic dower) of Tk3 lakh.
He said the couple was resting at his business office in Moghbazar in Dhaka when the video was secretly recorded.
Moriam Begum, who recently appeared in the SSC examination, also confirmed the marriage, saying, “He is my husband. We are married. That day, we went out and later rested at my father’s office.”
Jamaat Secretary and the party’s media department chief Azizur Rahman said on Tuesday that the party was aware of the video.
“The MP has informed us that the woman seen in the video is his second wife. The marriage took place with the consent of his first wife,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nazrul Islam’s Assistant Private Secretary (APS) Israfil Islam issued a statement on behalf of the MP, claiming that the video was part of a conspiracy.
According to the statement, Nazrul Islam went to the Moghbazar business office of his second wife’s father, Masum Billah, on 13 July with both his wives and stayed there for around one hour and 15 minutes.
The MP alleged that his driver and his second wife’s maternal uncle Obaidullah left the room on the pretext of checking the vehicle and later returned with several unidentified people. They allegedly confined them and took Tk1 lakh from them.
Nazrul Islam alleged that the incident was linked to previous disputes between Obaidullah and Masum Billah. He also claimed that Obaidullah recorded a private moment between him and his wife and circulated the video on Facebook and other social media platforms for personal gain.
The allegations could not be independently verified, and comments from the other parties involved were not immediately available.
