Elderly man killed trying to save child from train in Chattogram

A 55-year-old man named Delowar Hossain Mintu has died after being run over by a train while attempting to save a child in the Sholoshahar station area of Chattogram.

A 10-year-old boy named Rahat sustained severe injuries in the accident, resulting in his right arm and right leg being severed.

The incident occurred on Friday at around 1:30pm in the railway crossing area near Chashma Mosque beside Sholoshahar station, within the jurisdiction of Panchlaish Police Station.

The details were confirmed by Sholoshahar In-charge Sub-Inspector (SI) Asim Dhar.

The accident involved the Parjotak Express train, which was travelling from Chattogram to Cox’s Bazar, with the collision occurring at 1:47pm.

Renovation work on the road adjacent to the railway line had been ongoing for a long period, compelling pedestrians to walk along the tracks and creating a constant risk of accidents.

On Friday, as young Rahat was walking alongside the railway track, a train suddenly approached.

In a bid to rescue the child, Delowar Hossain Mintu stepped in, but was struck by the train and died at the scene.

Another person, 30-year-old Abdur Rahman, was also injured in the incident.

His injuries are not critical, though details regarding his relatives could not be ascertained.

The deceased, Delowar Hossain Mintu, lived in the Purba Nasirabad Tulatoli area of Chattogram city, whilst his ancestral home was in Feni.

The injured child, Rahat, is the son of Md Faruk, residing at Abdul Malek’s residence in the Gate No 2 area under Panchlaish Police Station.

Following the accident, Rahat was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where duty doctors referred him to Ward No 26.

He is currently receiving medical care at CMCH.
