BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has remarked that there is no alternative to the freedom of the media to develop and strengthen democracy.
He stated that an independent media is essential to ensure the rule of law and to further widen the space for democracy.
He made these remarks in his address at the 31st foundation anniversary event of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Thursday.
“Today, as much space for democracy as we have obtained, if we are to develop our democracy, if we are to strengthen our democracy, if we are to ensure the rule of law, there is no alternative to the freedom of your media,” Rizvi said.
Emphasising objective journalism, Rizvi observed, “If the media presents objective news, terrorism in society will decrease, bribery in society will decrease, society will become much cleaner”. He noted that the media plays an important responsibility in keeping society clean.
Rizvi wished for the welfare and bright future of journalists on the occasion of Dhaka Reporters Unity’s foundation anniversary. He added that the media must discharge the vital duty so that the country’s democratic journey moves towards a wonderful destination.
Earlier in the morning, the national flag was hoisted alongside the national anthem, followed by the releasing of balloons and pigeons to mark DRU’s anniversary.
Subsequently, an anniversary rally was brought out after Chief Guest Ruhul Kabir Rizvi inaugurated the event.
State Minister for Railways Habibur Rashid (MP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Central Working Council Member and MP for Patuakhali-2 constituency Shafiqul Islam Masud, former leadership of the DRU, and journalists from various media outlets were present at the event.
