Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has said the government is working to bring the country’s suicide rate down to zero.
He said preventing suicide requires not only government initiatives but also active participation from people across society to build a broad-based social movement.
The minister made the remarks on Thursday while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar marking World Suicide Prevention Day at the University Women’s Federation in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
The programme was jointly organised by the Association for Disabled People (ADP) and Rotary Club Ahsan Manzil.
Addressing students at the event, Sakhawat Hossain urged them to reject suicidal thoughts and continue fighting against life’s challenges, regardless of the difficulties they face.
He said failure is a natural part of life and people should not lose hope because of setbacks. Instead, they should continue making efforts to achieve success, as progress comes through perseverance.
Calling on people to say “no” to suicide, the minister highlighted the importance of responsibilities towards parents and family members.
He advised people to share their problems and emotions through discussions, saying issues that cannot be discussed with family members can be shared with friends to help overcome mental stress and frustration.
Emphasising the need for greater social awareness, Sakhawat Hossain said society cannot progress if people simply follow existing patterns without questioning them.
He called for a social movement against suicide based on positive thinking, empathy and awareness.
The seminar was chaired by ADP Chairman Roushan Ara Zaman.
Director General of the Directorate General of Health Education Dr Nazmul Hossain attended the event as the special guest, while University Women’s Federation Principal Afroza Sharmin delivered the vote of thanks.
