Popular Dhallywood actor Monowar Hossain Dipjol has been sued for defamation by his cousin and businessman Azizur Rahman Tiger.
The case was filed on Sunday (26 July) before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat by Azizur Rahman Tiger, managing director of A One Trading Bangladesh.
Dipjol’s manager Abdul Gani and personal assistant Khokon have also been named as accused.
According to the court’s bench assistant, Russell Khandaker, the magistrate ordered an investigation after hearing the complainant’s allegations.
The court directed the Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) to submit an investigation report by September 24.
In the complaint, the plaintiff alleged that Dipjol had long been attempting to damage his reputation out of jealousy over his business success and public standing.
According to the case statement, Dipjol’s manager, Abdul Gani, filed a general diary (GD) with Darus Salam Police Station on 3 August last year.
The GD alleged that several individuals, acting on Azizur Rahman Tiger’s instructions, attempted to remove the signboard of Navana CNG Filling Station, which had been rented by Dipjol, and replace it with a new signboard bearing their own name.
It also claimed that they asserted ownership of the property and demanded rent from the following month.
However, the complaint states that the police investigation found no evidence linking Azizur Rahman Tiger to the allegations made in the GD.
The plaintiff further claimed that he is the lawful owner of the disputed property.
He alleged that Dipjol falsely claimed ownership, published Facebook posts regarding the matter and attempted to tarnish his reputation.
The case also alleges that the issue was publicised through television channels, newspapers and online news portals following the Facebook posts, causing damage to the plaintiff’s social standing and business reputation.
Azizur Rahman Tiger further claimed that the incident caused him financial losses amounting to several crore taka.
