A special concert in Dhaka will celebrate the musical influence of singer-songwriter Kabir Suman, bringing together three contemporary artists to perform his songs alongside their own compositions.
Titled ‘Hathaat Rastay Office Ancholey’ after one of Suman’s songs, the concert will take place at Butternote Jazz Cafe in Banani on 2 October from 7pm. Suman himself will not attend the event.
Singer-songwriters Autumnal Moon, Rezaul Karim Limon and Nahid Hasan will perform at the programme, organised by Joy Shahriar’s production house Aajob Karkhana.
According to Shahriar, the concert is part of an initiative to honour singer-songwriters whose work has influenced subsequent generations of musicians.
“Among those whose songs have inspired us as singer-songwriters, Kabir Suman is one of the foremost,” he said. “Alongside his songs, the artists will perform their own songs as a tribute to Kabir Suman.”
The organisers intend to make the series different from conventional cover concerts. Rather than performing only songs by the featured artist, participating musicians will present their own work alongside songs that have influenced them.
Aajob Karkhana launched the series in July with a tribute to Anjan Dutt. Shahriar performed alongside Ahmed Hasan Sunny and Shubhra at the programme.
The production house plans to continue the series with tributes to other influential singer-songwriters, including Sanjeeb Choudhury, Nachiketa Chakraborty, Gautam Chattopadhyay and Maksudul Haque.
Tickets for the Kabir Suman tribute concert cost Tk 700 during the early-bird period and Tk 1,000 at the venue.
