Police have issued 12 simple safety rules for drivers and motorcyclists across the country to reduce road accidents and make travel safer.
The guidelines were published in an official notice on the verified Facebook page of Bangladesh Police.
Under the directives, both motorcycle drivers and passengers must wear helmets, while car drivers and passengers are required to wear seat belts.
The guidelines also restrict motorcycle travel to a maximum of two people, including the driver.
Drivers have been instructed not to use mobile phones whilst driving and to refrain from unnecessary honking. In addition, motorists must stick to prescribed speed limits and follow traffic signals properly.
To prevent collisions, drivers are advised to stay aware of the “blind spots” of large and heavy vehicles, use indicators before turning or changing lanes, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
During adverse weather conditions such as fog and rain, drivers should slow down and proceed with caution.
The police also urged motorists to stay patient and control their temper during traffic jams or when other drivers make mistakes.
The guidelines strictly prohibit driving under the influence of drugs, operating vehicles whilst drowsy, or driving on the wrong side of the road.
Risky overtaking on highways is explicitly cautioned against, with motorists directed to stick to designated lanes.
Bangladesh Police advised all drivers to always carry up-to-date documentation, including a valid driving licence and vehicle papers.
The law enforcement agency called upon motorists to follow these instructions to protect both themselves and their families.
