UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk held talks with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Friday during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The meeting took place in the bilateral meeting room of the Prime Minister’s suite at the Hyatt Grand Central, where Tarique has been staying during his visit.
Türk’s office is notable for producing a widely referenced report documenting atrocities committed by Bangladesh’s security and law enforcement agencies during the student‑led movement that culminated in the July Uprising of 2024.
The report concluded that in the majority of cases it examined, serious abuses had occurred. The July Uprising was a recurring theme in Tarique’s maiden address to the General Assembly earlier this week.
In his speech, he paid tribute to “all those who were martyred and injured in the mass uprising of the brave students and people in July-August 2024 against fascism.”
