Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to address the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at 5pm Thursday (local time).
He will deliver his speech in Bangla at 3am Friday (Bangladesh time). Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin confirmed the timing during a press briefing in New York on Wednesday.
The address marks Tarique’s first speech to the UNGA since assuming office as prime minister on 17 February.
Describing the diplomatic milestone, Mahdi noted that the prime minister is embarking on a new chapter by following the precedent set by his father former president Ziaur Rahman, and his mother former prime minister Khaleda Zia, both of whom previously addressed the UNGA.
“The prime minister will deliver his speech in Bangla, reflecting the emotions, aspirations and expectations of the people of Bangladesh,” Mahdi said.
Tarique reached New York on 21 September for his inaugural official trip to the United States as head of government. Prior to this travel, his first two state visits were to Malaysia and China.
