The family of construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim, who was killed after being run over by a speeding private car on a footpath in Baridhara, has reached an out-of-court compromise of Tk 9 lakh with representatives of 17-year-old driver Ajan Ali Sharif.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court on Thursday ordered the teenager to be sent to a juvenile correction centre in connection with a Road Transport Act case, setting a bail hearing for next Sunday.
Confirming the financial settlement, defence lawyer Alamgir Hossain confirmed that a Tk9 lakh compromise had been reached on behalf of the juvenile with the victim’s family.
He added that the court issued the direction to send the teenager to a juvenile correction centre following an application by the investigating officer, and that the defence will formally submit the settlement agreement on the day of the bail hearing when applying for bail.
The court order was passed by Judge Md Abdul Moktadir of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 following a hearing on Thursday.
The fatal crash occurred at around 5pm on 22 September on Road 1 in the Baridhara Diplomatic Area under Gulshan Police Station. A speeding private car lost control, mounted the footpath, and ran over construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim, who was standing there.
He was rescued in critical condition and rushed to hospital, where an attending doctor declared him dead.
Following the impact, the vehicle crashed into a street lamp post. Police stated that CCTV footage captured the car speeding onto the footpath.
Local residents detained a juvenile who emerged from the driver’s seat after the crash and handed him over to the police, although allegations later surfaced that he had been released. The victim’s brother, Moktadir, subsequently filed a case as the plaintiff with Gulshan Police Station.
Although Akash Marak was initially named as the car driver in the case, subsequent police investigation – including CCTV footage analysis – revealed that juvenile Ajan Ali Sharif was actually driving the vehicle. Police arrested Ajan on Wednesday from a residence on Road 12 in Gulshan.
On Thursday, Sub-Inspector Md Arifin Islam of Gulshan Police Station, the investigating officer in the case, produced the teenager in court with an application seeking his detention.
In the application, the investigating officer stated that primary evidence of child Ajan Ali Sharif’s involvement in the incident had been found, and that keeping the child detained was essential for a proper and ongoing investigation.
