Netflix has renewed the young adult series ‘Crew Girl’ for a second season less than two weeks after its debut, as the show continues to attract viewers on the streaming platform, writes The Hollywood Reporter.
The series premiered on 10 September and follows Teagan Tao, played by Miku Martineau, a talented rower who discovers that her new prep school does not have a girls’ rowing team.
Teagan eventually joins the school’s boys’ crew as its coxswain. The team has a reputation for being “notoriously dysfunctional”, while Teagan’s arrival leads to a series of personal, romantic and sporting complications.
Martineau welcomed the renewal and said the second season would explore more of the characters, relationships and rowing team.
“I am beyond excited for ‘Crew Girl’ season two,” she said in a statement. “There’s so much left to explore with the characters, the romances, and the rowing team, it’s going to be a ride for sure! All I know is that it will definitely be a packed, juicy, drama filled second season so I’m ready to get back in a boat and on camera.”
The series has also recorded strong viewing figures on Netflix. It ranked fourth among the platform’s English-language series during the week of 7-13 September before climbing to second place for 14-20 September.
According to Netflix’s internal figures, ‘Crew Girl’ generated 11.3 million views worldwide during the latter week, equivalent to 70.1 million hours of viewing. Nielsen’s US streaming figures for the show’s premiere week were due to be released on Thursday.
Martineau leads the cast alongside Jessica Paré, Sam Braun, Kyle Clark and Thomas Cadrot.
Blue Ant Studios produces the series, which Vivian Lin and Morwyn Brebner developed. Lin also serves as an executive producer alongside Jeff Norton, Lindsay Macadam, Hillary Zwick Turner, Tony Chung, Lori Massini, Matthew Hornburg, Mark J.W. Bishop and Jennifer McCarron for Blue Ant Studios.
