The complete shutdown at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) continued for the third consecutive day on Thursday as students pressed their demand for the reinstatement of Vice‑Chancellor Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem.
From 10am, students formed a human chain in front of the university’s Shaheed Minar.
Debojit Das Gupta, a fourth‑year student of the Civil Engineering Department, said, “Sayem Sir is a man of many qualities. He was highly respected as a teacher and vice‑chancellor. Our movement will continue until he is reinstated. We have only one demand — we want Sayem Sir back as VC.”
Meanwhile, newly appointed Vice‑Chancellor Sheikh Shariful Alam said on Wednesday that he would join CUET very soon. Media reports indicate he has already arrived in Chattogram.
The signature campaign also continued Thursday. As part of the announced programmes, a torch procession is scheduled to be held on campus at 6:30pm.
On the night of 21 September, the Ministry of Education issued a notification removing Prof Sayem from the post of VC and appointing Prof Shariful in his place. Students immediately staged protests on campus that night.
The shutdown began on 22 September, halting classes, examinations and all academic activities.
On Wednesday, the second day of the shutdown, students also carried out the signature campaign.
