A Dhaka court on Sunday deferred until 4 October the bail hearing of a 17-year-old boy arrested in connection with the death of construction worker Mehedi Hasan, who was killed after being run over by a car in Baridhara.
Judge Md Abdul Moktadir of Dhaka Children Court-8 fixed the date after defence lawyer Md Alamgir Hossain sought time for bail hearing.
State Counsel Mohammad Sharif Uddin Mamun confirmed the court order.
Earlier on 24 September, police produced the teenager before the court, where Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Arefin Islam of Gulshan Police Station sought an order to send him to a juvenile facility.
Following the plea, the court sent him to Tongi Juvenile Development Centre in Gazipur.
The fatal crash occurred at around 5pm on 22 September on Road 1 in the Baridhara Diplomatic Area under Gulshan Police Station. A speeding private car lost control, mounted the footpath, and ran over construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim, who was standing there. He was rescued in critical condition and rushed to hospital, where an attending doctor declared him dead.
Immediately after the accident, bystanders caught the teenager, who was behind the wheel, and handed him over to police. However, after questioning, police released him to the custody of his uncle that night.
On 23 September, the victim’s brother Moktadir Islam filed a case with Gulshan Police Station. Following public criticism over the release, police re-arrested the teenager and produced him before the court.
