A tourist was killed and 13 others injured when a vehicle lost control and fell into a roadside ditch on Marine Drive in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.

The deceased, Habibur Rahman, 50, was from Gopdighi in Mithamain upazila, Kishoreganj. He had been living with his family in Dhaka’s Mohakhali.

Seven of the injured are being treated at Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital.

The accident occurred around 5pm on Sunday near the Rejukhal Bridge area of Jaliapalong union in Ukhiya.

Quoting injured passengers, Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer‑in‑charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said a group of 14 people from Kishoreganj had rented a tourist jeep to travel along Marine Drive.

On their way back in the afternoon, the driver lost control near Rejukhal Bridge, and the vehicle overturned into a roadside ditch. All passengers sustained injuries, the OC said.

The OC added: “With the help of locals, the injured were taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared one person dead. Six others received primary treatment and left, while seven remain hospitalised.”

Habibur Rahman’s body has been kept at the hospital morgue.
