An Awami League leader was allegedly snatched away after being arrested by police in Chandipur village of Damurhuda upazila in Chuadanga.
The incident took place around 9:30pm on Wednesday in Chandipur village under Darshana Police Station.
Police have detained four people, including two women, for their alleged involvement.
According to police sources, a team from Darshana Police Station conducted a raid in Chandipur village on Wednesday night on the instructions of Darshana Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Md Mokhlesur Rahman.
During the operation, they arrested Abu Siddique, an accused in multiple cases. He is a member of the Kurulgachhi Union Parishad and president of a ward unit of the banned Awami League.
Police said that after Abu Siddique was arrested, his family members and local residents obstructed the officers. At one stage, they allegedly assaulted two police personnel and forcibly freed him from custody. He then escaped while still wearing handcuffs.
Darshana Police Station OC Mokhlesur confirmed the incident, saying efforts were underway to rearrest the fugitive.
“We are trying to arrest the absconding accused. Multiple police teams are conducting operations to capture him,” he said.
He added that Abu Siddique is wanted in several cases filed with the police station.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Nurullah of the Damurhuda-Jibannagar Circle said, “After the arrest, members of his family attacked the police. Two of our officers were injured in the incident.”
