A Dhaka court on Sunday sent six more people to jail in a case filed over vandalism, looting and demolition of the Radda MCH-FP Centre office and health facility in Mirpur-1.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter passed the order following a plea from the investigating officer, said Lutfur Rahman, a sub-inspector of the prosecution department.
The accused sent to jail are Shahadat Hossain, Kazi Mokbul Hossain, Shah Alam, Atikur Rahman, Kamrul Islam and Shakil.
Shah Ali Police Station SI and investigating officer Atowar Rahman produced the suspects in court and sought their detention.
Defence lawyer Muhammad Emran sought bail and requested a hearing on Monday. The court sent them to jail and set Monday for the bail hearing.
Earlier on Saturday, four others — Sohel, 22, Jewel, 23, Jihad Hasan, 21, and Rabbi, 20 — were sent to jail in the same case.
Alleged attack and looting
According to the case statement, a group of people entered the Radda MCH-FP Centre premises by scaling the boundary wall around midnight on Thursday, carrying hammers, sticks and local weapons.
They allegedly assaulted and tied up night guards Andriya Sarker and Abdul Hai.
The attackers later used heavy machinery and excavators to demolish one concrete building and three semi-pucca structures, according to the statement. The damaged buildings included a family planning service centre and facilities used by the clinic in-charge, doctors and deputy clinic in-charge.
The case statement further alleged that the attackers vandalised furniture and medical equipment in different rooms. Doors and windows of the ultrasonography, vaccination and laboratory rooms were also damaged.
The attackers allegedly took away medicines, medical supplies, an ultrasonography machine, generator, computers, printers, refrigerators, air conditioners and steel cabinets.
The complaint also alleged that the attackers threatened the night guards and left the premises after putting up a banner and signboard of a cooperative society.
Radda alleged that a large quantity of office materials and vaccination supplies were looted during the attack.
Case filed against 200-250 people
Radda Executive Director Nasrin Akhter filed the case with Shah Ali Police Station. The case names local BNP leader Hanif and 200 to 250 unidentified people as accused.
According to Radda MCH-FP Centre, the organisation has been providing free primary healthcare, maternal care and family planning services to poor and vulnerable mothers and children for nearly 50 years through a partnership with the government.
