A Dhaka court has denied bail for 27 people who were arrested and sent to jail following a police raid at the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) office in Gulistan.
Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter passed the order on Monday afternoon, saying further investigation was required. The prosecution police Sub-inspector Masum Mia confirmed the development.
During the hearing, defence lawyers including Nilanjana Rifat and Taslima Jahan Popi applied for bail, while prosecutors Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon and Harun‑ur‑Rashid opposed it.
After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail petitions.
Following an application from the investigation officer on Sunday, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam had sent the 27 accused to jail.
The accused are Didarul Alam Tuhin, Iman Ahmed Iman, Molla Md Shahjahan Siraj, Joy Sarkar, Miraj Ahmed, Miraj Malitha, Robiul Islam, Milon Kumar Mohanto, Kausar Hossain, Anjan Shil, Jalal Uddin Mondol, Abdul Latif, Shamim Ahmed, Ahammed Ahsan Habib, Sujan Ali, Tasikul Islam, Saifullah Sayek, Nayon Ali, Sajidul Islam Tuhin, Tajul Islam, Niskor Samrat Hossain Talukdar, Anwar Hossain, Alamgir Hossain, Al Amin Hawlader, Tushar Ali, Rashidul Haque, and Mir Muktisur Rahman.
On Sunday, Paltan Model Police Station SI Nazmul Islam filed the application stating that the accused created instability and disorder inside the Jasad office by chanting “Joy Bangla”.
It further said that with the help of Paltan Model Police Station officers and locals, they were detained around 4:10pm Saturday. During questioning, they failed to provide satisfactory explanations for their presence.
Police launched the raid at the Jasad office in Gulistan around 3pm Saturday.
After the operation, Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Harun‑ur‑Rashid said about 280 to 300 people had been taken into custody.
Police said the raid was based on information that leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations had gathered inside the Jasad office.
