Khulna Shipyard Limited (KSY), operated by the Bangladesh Navy, has launched a modern 70-tonne bollard pull capacity tugboat named “Tiakhali-4” for Payra Port Authority.
By using local technology, engineering expertise, and a skilled domestic workforce, the vessel marks a major achievement in advancing “Made in Bangladesh” capabilities in defence and shipbuilding.
The launching ceremony took place on Monday at the Khulna Shipyard premises. Managing Director Rear Admiral Md Abdul Latif attended as the chief guest, alongside senior officials from KSY, Payra Port Authority, and project personnel.
“Tiakhali-4” has been constructed as the second vessel under a project to build two 70-tonne bollards pull capacity tugboats for the port authority.
Designed by Singapore-based Navnautic Private Limited, the tugboat was constructed under the supervision of international classification society Bureau Veritas (BV).
The 37-metre-long tugboat has a displacement of 1,100 tonnes, a draft of 5 metres, and a maximum speed of 13.8 miles per hour. It features an advanced Z-Drive Propulsion System to carry out essential port tasks, including ship berthing, unberthing, towing, and direction control at Payra Port.
Beyond standard harbour operations, “Tiakhali-4” is equipped for versatile maritime duties.
Fitted with a modern fire-fighting system, it can execute emergency rescue operations, underwater surveys, salvage tasks, pilot transportation, and sea navigation under adverse weather conditions.
The project demonstrates the effective combination of modern technology and local technical skills at KSY, which has built over 800 new ships and repaired more than 2,500 vessels since its establishment.
Officials highlighted that constructing this high-tech vessel demonstrates domestic technical excellence, enhances operational dynamism at Payra Port, and supports national maritime infrastructure and the growing blue economy.
